One wonderful hazard of traveling from St. Louis to Memphis is good food, and lots of it. Doug and I got started at Blues City Cafe on Beale Street, not they say the very best bbq in Memphis, but better than I deserve. We each got the ribs and cat fish. You can look and drool on this website.
The next day we stop in the town of Sikeston to a restaurant called Lambert's for fried chicken and sides-- buckets full of sides that roam the giant eating halls: fried potatoes, deep fried okra and macaroni with tomatoes on our day. But those are in addition to the sides you get with your meal: in my case mashed potatoes and cole slaw and four pieces of fried chicken, plus a diet coke the size of small water barrel. The most terrifying thing at Lambert's for the athletically challenged are the "throwed rolls." Okay, I'll admit it. I wasn't wearing number 24. My roll was dropped into my hand pretty much the way they give you communion these days. The trajectory was straight down maybe nine inches. Maybe 6. Doug insisted the roll get thrown all the way from the piano to our table across the room, maybe 110 feet. Even the waiter was impressed and he's seen it all. But remember, I'd been traumatized as a child. Little league was not kind to me. But Lambert's was. We left several thousand calories heavier. Here's their website.
Then came Sweetie Pie's. Karen and Judy took us there-- a restaurant run by former Ikette Robbie Montgomery. I had ribs, mashed potatoes and gravy, okra, blackeyed peas and corn bread. Unbelievable. I didn't think to take a picture till I was half way done.
Others were getting catfish, maybe chicken. I don't know. I only had eyes for my ribs.
Then it was time for photo-fest. I don't know if I'll post the right ones-- but if the photos aren't good, the food and the company was.
It's so nice to see you all together enjoying your time !!!!!!!
