Here's a long clip with CB sitting down to the piano while Billy Peek and Jimmy Marsala keep it moving on the guitar front. Note the two finger, double note right hand style that Daryl Davis mentioned in his piece on the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival. And the bonus: "Do You Love Me?!" We do, Mr. Berry, we do!
This is it!! I was there :-) This is the first time I have seen CB live. August 1983, "Covo di Nord Est", Santa Margherita Ligure (near Portofino). Thanks Peter!

This was a cool introduction to Chuck Berry, I'd say. Evidently the entire thing is recorded. We can only hope it all gets in.
ReplyDeleteI love the piano bits. I've seen him tinkle on it, but not actually play. You can see how he uses the same double note style he has on guitar on these tunes. Daryl Davis talks about that in his Chesapeake piece.
I also loves that he plays that song "Do You Love Me?" at the end. That's the benefit of him travelling with his own musicians. You get to see the stuff you don't normally see!
ReplyDeleteThe lenght of the tv show was of about an hour. Hope they will post it entirely (I had a video tape but I've lost it...).

ReplyDeleteYes Doug, it sounds like it really was a great show. So many years. I even see myself there :-) You know the standing group (and loud) which Chuck indicates with a smile? I was standing there proudly with a kind of Jonathan Richmanesque hair...:-)
